The 126 route and how long a loaded truck takes
State Route 126 runs from the Castaic Junction at Interstate 5 along the Santa Clara River Valley and finishes at US 101 in Ventura. Santa Clarita, which counted 228,673 residents in 2020, sits about 30 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles, so for many people the 126 is the natural way west.
The drive is around 50 miles end to end for a household heading to Ventura or Oxnard. For a car that is under an hour on a clear day. A loaded box truck is slower, because the road is mostly two lanes in each direction with agricultural traffic, signals in the towns and the occasional slowdown at the county line. We tell people to plan on a bit more than they think and to treat the quoted arrival time as a window.
Leave early. The morning sun and the heat that builds through the valley by early afternoon are hard on both crews and furniture, which is a good reason to be unloading by noon in summer.
Check a California mover's licence first
California licenses household goods movers through the Bureau of Household Goods and Services, and the Bureau's own consumer page recently carried a news release about a July 2026 enforcement action against unlicensed movers in the Bay Area and Southern California. That is a reminder to do the check yourself.
Ask any company for its state licence number before you sign, then look it up on the Bureau's licence search. Confirm that the name on the quote matches the name on the licence, and be wary of anyone who asks for a large cash deposit up front or will not put the price in writing.
A written estimate should list the crew size, the hourly rate or fixed price, any travel charge and what valuation coverage is included. If a company is vague about any of these, move on to the next one.
Packing for a valley-to-coast move
The valley is dry and dusty, the coast is cooler and damp, and your belongings feel that change. Wrap wooden furniture and anything with a finish, and do not seal clothing in plastic bags for long, since moisture can get trapped in the move.
Use small boxes for books and tools, large ones for light items such as linens, and label every box by room and by what is inside. Pack a first-night box with sheets, towels, toiletries and a kettle or coffee maker so you are not hunting through cartons on the evening you arrive.
Photograph the back of the television and your cable setup before unplugging anything. Take the shelves out of the fridge and tape them, and keep medication, passports and laptops with you in the car.
Who handles the Ventura and Oxnard end
Our own crews work the Santa Clarita Valley, from Valencia and Newhall to Canyon Country and Saugus, and we try not to promise what is better done by a team that works the other side of the county line every week.
If you are heading west to Ventura or Oxnard, Elite Movers & Packing Services works that end of the 126; their Ventura page lists the neighbourhoods they cover.
Whichever company you choose, ask them to walk through the access at the new address before the day: gate codes, parking, stairs and any building rules about moving hours. A short call a few days ahead prevents most surprises.
It also helps to keep a simple folder with the signed estimate, the licence number and the names of the crew lead and the dispatcher. If anything is damaged or delayed, having those details to hand makes a claim far easier to sort out.
